Why IoT technology is a force for good
While these older technologies are reaching the ends of their lifespans and much is now said of their global sunsetting, the reality is still that 2G and 3G remain in widespread use globally, especially in markets where final sunset dates are well into the second half of this decade. Quectel therefore continues to offer our customers the modules they need to support applications relying on these technologies, as well as support and advice for migrating to the appropriate upgrades in preparation for final sunsets, most notably to LTE Cat 1, LTE Cat 1 Bis and LTE 450.
GNSS modules connect IoT devices to the Global Navigation Satellite System – a widely deployed and accepted way to determine location precisely without needing to rely on coverage by or the signal strength of cellular networks. It therefore underpins navigation, tracking and tracing of a wide variety of goods and assets and billions of GNSS IoT devices are now deployed worldwide.
However, GNSS applications are not one-size-fits-all and there are some considerable challenges for organizations to find and adapt the right solutions to deliver their applications. Where automotive solutions lack a clear view of satellites for instance, caused by dense buildings or bad weather, it can be very challenging for any GNSS module to provide an accurate position – which is compounded by multipath effects prevalent in deep urban canyons. Here, innovations such as dead reckoning can help, which can use information from sensors such as the accelerometer to augment the performance of GNSS positioning. Innovators need to know which approach works best for them – and that is where we can help.
Quectel’s wide range of ultra-compact, low-power GNSS modules cover the full range of requirements in standard precision, high precision, dead reckoning and timing, for application scenarios as diverse as ADAS and self-driving, unmanned flight, and smart agriculture. And, with unsurpassed aftermarket support services, the journey with us does not end with a purchase – that’s just the beginning.
2G and 3G modules support applications relying on the second and third generation of cellular networks – 2G modules support data rates of up to 85.6Kbps, while 3G modules support data rates of up to 7.2Mbps.
